From the middle of the 19th century, Sheffield grew rapidly to become the world's leading steel manufacturing centre with most of the steel works and factories based in the lower Don Valley, i.e. Hadfields in the East Hecla Works, which is now home to the Meadowhall shopping complex.

Now many of the old factories have been replaced with modern supermarkets shopping malls and retail trading estates.
